The Putting Mat

The Tool That Quietly Transformed My Putting

Putting is where rounds are won and lost. You can stripe it all day off the tee, hit every green in regulation, and still walk away frustrated because the ball won't go in the hole. For me, the Visio putting mat has become one of the most important parts of my daily routine and I want to break down exactly how I use it and why it works.

The Routine

On practice days I run through 200 putts on the mat. I start with 50 two-handed, then 50 with my right arm only, 50 with my left, and finish with another 50 two-handed. During tournament weeks I scale back to around 30 per set to manage time, but the structure stays the same. The repetition is the point. By the time I get to the course, my stroke is not something I need to think about. It is already there.

The Tees and the Gate

One of the things I do is place tees in every other hole along the mat. This creates a path for my putter head and gives me instant feedback on my stroke. If I clip a tee, I know immediately. There is no guessing, no video review needed. The mat tells me right away. Over time this builds the kind of muscle memory that lets me completely ignore my stroke on the course.

I also place two tees at the front of the mat as a gate for the ball. This tells me whether my start line is good. If I am pushing or pulling, I find out instantly. My swing coach Jason always says the two most important things in putting are start line and speed. The gate keeps me honest every single day.

Why This Matters on the Course

My biggest trap in putting is standing over a ball on the course and thinking about my stroke. That is a fast way to get in my way. Because of the reps I put in on the mat, I walk onto the green knowing my stroke is in a good place. All I have to focus on is line and speed. The two things that actually determine whether the ball goes in. The mat allows me to build muscle memory and frees my mind to play.
